Millets is like an alternative to common grains. It can be used to prepare all kind of food varieties which is possible to prepare with rice. It releases less amount of glucose as compared to glucose. It is a mineral with rich source of magnesium and acts as co-factor for more than 300 enzymes. Most of them are involved in secretion of insulin.
Thus millets helpĀ in reducing the blood glucose level by improving insulin secretion.
Millets and whole grains in their natural form have low GI.
Food substances containing high amount of GI will produce spikes in blood sugar which lead to insulin resistance. This inturn may lead to obesity, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes.
To gain their benefits millets inclusion should be increased in wide variety of diet. Focusing only on one would not meet the nutritional requirements so it can be taken in the form of hot bowl with low fat milk and with a variety of dried fruits.
