1:- MOTOR NERVE NUCLEI:
Somatic efferent nuclei- This functional component supplies the skeletal muscles developed from somites. The nuclei are present mostly medially. They are-
a) Nucleus of 3rd nerve- present in the midbrain at the level of superior colliculus.
b) Nucleus of 4th cranial nerve- present in the midbrain at the level of inferior colliculus.
c) Nucleus of 5th cranial nerve- It is present in the pons close to the midline.
d) Nucleus of hypoglossal nerve- present in the medulla oblongata.
2:- e) NUCLEUS OF SPECIAL VISCERAL EFFERENT (or) BRONCHIAL EFFERENT-
These are present in the middle. They supply the skeletal muscles developed from pharyngeal arches. These are
1) Motor nucles of trigeminal nerve- It is present in the pons
2) Motor nucleus of facial nerve- It is present in the pons
f) Nucleus ambigous- This gives rise to bronchial efferent functional component of 9th, 10th , and a part of accessory spinal nerve.
3:- GENERAL VISCERAL EFFERENT NUCLEUS:-
It is present most laterally. It gives rise to preganglionic parasympathetic fibres. These are-
a) Edinger westpal nuclues- It is present in the midbrain close to 3rd cranial nerve.
b) Superior satyatory nucleus, Lacrimatory nucleus- It is present in the pons close to the facial nerve.
c) Dorsal nucleus of vagus and inferior salivatory nucleus which are present in the medulla.
SENSORY NERVE NUCLEI:- SOMATIC AFFERENT NERVE NUCLEI- The general and special somatic afferent fibres form the body wall.
a) Vestibular and cochlear nucleus- Receives the sensation of hearing
b) Mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal Nerve- It receives general sensations of head and face.
SPECIAL VISCERAL AFFERENT NUCLEI- present in the midline it receives taste sensations.
a) Nucleus of tractus solitorius- It receives all the taste fibres.
General visceral and afferent- It is present most medially.
Dorsal nucleus of vagus- present in the medulla receives visceroreceptive fibres from the thoracoabdominal viscera.
