Smartlipo and liposuction both are fat removal techniques but in recent times liposuction is losing its reputation due to the arrival of smartlipo and the amount of media attention it is getting since the smartlipo device got approved by FDA in November 2006 which is practiced in the same field.
Smart liposuction is seeking attention not just because it is approved by FDA but there are many more advantages of smartlipo when compared to traditional liposuction. The following are the major differences between smartlipo and traditional liposuction.
SMARTLIPO vs. LIPOSUCTION
The first and foremost factor which holds the edge for smartlipo over liposuction is the degree of safety.
Smartlipo surgery is done under tumescent anesthesia also called local anesthesia where as traditional liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. The drugs of general anesthesia carries a lot of risk with them and may cause respiratory problems besides causing allergy where as local anesthesia is much safer. Tumescent anesthesia consists of lidocaine and epinephrine.
Smartlipo surgery doesn’t really involve any pain as it was done under local anesthesia and with small cannula where as in traditional liposuction because of the larger size of the tube it may damage any of the blood vessels or other tissues resulting in trauma causing lot of pain after the surgery is done.
Traditional liposuction surgery may leave you with lot of bruising and bleeding because of the large size of the tube of about 6 mm in diameter where as in smartlipo a very tiny cannula of just about 1 mm is used with small incision. Moreover the epinephrine infused under the skin causes constriction of blood vessels preventing loss of blood.
The patient remains awake during the smartlipo surgery with minimum discomfort feeling almost similar sensations of what we feel during root canal treatment.
Traditional liposuction is not an ideal surgery for small and localized fat where as smartlipo is the best procedure to remove small localized fat by surgery.
Traditional liposuction may leave the surgery area skin loose and drooping but the laser involved in smartlipo surgery enhances the collagen of the surgery area giving it a firm and pleasing look.
Unlike traditional liposuction smartlipo is a outpatient procedure so minimum downtime and the surgery can be done within 45 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the area being treated.
Smartlipo patients do generally have very short recovery period where as in traditional liposuction the recovery period is comparatively longer.
So our advice if you are looking to get rid of localized fat by surgery then smartlipo is the best by far technique developed by cynosure.
