Smartlipo surgery is done by a device called smartlipo or laser lipo which is manufactured by company called cynosure. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure of unwanted fat removal.

HOW SMARTLIPO SURGERY IS PERFORMED?

Smartlipo doctor first marks the area where surgery has to be performed. Tumescent fluid which contains lidocaine and epinephrine is infused under the skin of the area where surgery has to be done. Once the local anesthesia is infused and gets administered in the fat the procedure is started.

The smartlipo cannula which is so tiny of about 1 mm to 2 mm in diameter is inserted just beneath the skin by small incisions of about 2 mm. The cannula contains a laser beam which produces a single wavelength of light which is specifically designed for the purpose of tightening skin and melting fat. As the laser which is present on the cannula passes under the skin it causes immediate contraction of the skin by heating the lower layers of the skin which leads to contraction of collagen under the skin.

Smartlipo surgeon after that will place the laser lipo under deeper layers of the fat and the surgeon moves the cannula all over the area where surgery has to be performed causing melting of fat. As the fat gets melted and liquefied it is drained out naturally from the incisions which the doctor makes for inserting the cannula. The sooner the fat gets drained out the sooner will be the recovery.

SMARTLIPO Mpx

Smartlipo Mpx is an improvement in the same field or you can call it an upgrade of the original smartlipo device. It is approved by FDA. The smartlipo Mpx is three times the size of original smartlipo device as it uses an extra laser besides the 1064nm laser which is useful in destroying the fat with tiny explosions where as the new laser which is 1320nm actually works by heating the skin making them liquefied. There is not much difference for the recovery period between the original smartlipo and smartlipo Mpx but the main difference is the safety between the two. The new laser lipo has a great safety feature. In case while performing surgery if the surgeon holds the cannula for too longer than needed then it slows down itself giving an indication to the surgeon to move on. Besides this the smartlipo Mpx also increases the amount of skin tightening more than the original laser lipo.

During the smartlipo procedure the patient remains awake under local anesthesia feeling no pain or with tingling sensation which we feel during a root canal surgery. The doctor may even asks the patient to stand up to check whether the fat got uniformly removed or not and if the doctor feels there is still some problem areas then they may continue to work on.

The number of sessions required depends on the number of areas need to be treated. Smartlipo surgery can be performed at 2 different areas of the body at the same time but it needs to be carefully done because the lidocaine which needs to be infused is calculated and if it goes beyond the limit then the procedure has to be stopped. So it is advisable to split up to the body areas of treatment in two different sessions.

SMARTLIPO POST-OPERATIVE CARE

The patient will be on compression bandages which help in preventing the blood from clotting. After the procedure is completed the patient is put on antibiotics for some days to prevent any possible infection. The patient may also be prescribed any analgesics or pain medicines to prevent any unwanted pain.
